Independent Living (IL) Program
Our Independent Living Program was created to help those with disabilities receive information and partner with an advocate at DAC to form a plan on how to live as independent as possible. Each Independent Plan is tailored to each individual, and put together with an IL Specialist.
The Independent Living Philosophy
The philosophy of Independent Living stems from the ideology that persons with disabilities should have the same civil and human rights as their fellow citizens without disabilities. They should expect equal access to all aspects of society whether social, economic or political, and that they have the same aspirations as people who do not have disabilities. Persons with disabilities are in the best position to know their own needs, and are best suited to understand the needs of others with disabilities.
Comprehensive programs that advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities and provide various means of support, resources and training as well as support groups and peer mentoring, can empower those persons to clear the barriers on the path to becoming independent. This can lead to successfully reaching their goals and fulfilling their aspirations.
Through realistic, open and informed attitudes and behaviors both disabled and able persons can share the responsibility of achieving the societal goal of seeing persons with disabilities as independent and able to succeed in our ever-changing society.
