DAC is planning a special evening for the Parade of Lights this Saturday, October 22 in downtown Chico. Festivities get underway at 6:00 PM on Broadway next to the Downtown Plaza. In partnership with Ability First, great local nonprofit specializing in adaptive athletics for youth with disabilities, Disability Action Center will be presenting our first-ever HANDCYCLE CHALLENGE! We’ll have an array of adaptive cycles available to try – for people of all ages and all abilities. We’ll also have music and games and challenges at various levels + prizes and giveaways. One block down from us, bewtween 5th and 6th Streets on Broadway, Ability First will be demonstrating Wheelchair Rugby!
And that’s just the beginning of the fun! During the Handcycle Challenge we’ll have lights and glow-sticks to decorate your own personal rig, a borrowed wheelchair or handcycle – or yourself! At 7:15 we’ll head over to our assigned staging area and prepare to join the Parade of LIghts! If you haven’t experienced this parade you really should treat yourself – it is colorful, creative and very festive.
We welcome everyone who wants to roll, walk or ride the float. We aren’t taking the pirate ship out this year, so no pirate costumes necessary. The parade theme is “Wonders of the Wild,” so if you have an animal mask or costume please wear it and bring any extras you might have. If not – just come as you are!
We would be grateful for volunteer support and/or participants. A couple of stout people to help wrangle wheelchairs would be greatly appreciated. But most of all we want YOU and YOURS to join us, have fun AND demonstrate what inclusion for people with disabilities looks like.
One last note: We will begin setting up at around 5:00 PM, 4th & Broadway, so come a bit early if you can. If you wait until closer to start time parking downtown can be tricky … so give yourselves PLENTY of time!
For more information or questions or to RSVP please call Disability Action Center and ask for Evan. 530-893-8527. (RSVP is NOT necessary. This is an open to the public event.) Or send an email to Kathlyn@actionctr.org See you Saturday!
