Success Story – Assistive Technology & Reuse Program

Today Jacob received an Invacare Pronto M91 power wheelchair from ILSNC Reuse program. The power wheelchair was donated last month in need of two new batteries. Through the AT Networks (Now Ability Tools), Keep the Wheels Rolling Repair Fund, supported by a grant from Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, ILSNC was able to purchase new batteries for the power wheelchair.

Assistance dog helps Red Bluff woman maintain her independence. Red Bluff Daily News. RED BLUFF   Shawna Roberson has a new full-time aide, and she comes with four paws, a wagging tail and lots of fur. Flicka is more than a pet. She is the second highly skilled assistance dog that Shawna has received free of charge from Canine Companions for Independence, a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support free of charge. Shawna has several disabilities, and Flicka will help her maintain her independence by performing everyday tasks. The pair graduated together after completing an intense, residential, two-week Team Training course at Canine Companions’ Northwest Regional Training Center in Santa Rosa. During Team Training, students are strategically matched with assistance dogs and learn how to work with them safely and effectively. The dogs are trained for two years prior in as many as 40 commands before they are ready to become someone’s full-time helper. Thanks to Canine Companions’ generous supporters, the dogs, their training and ongoing follow-up support are provided free of charge. According to “Flicka will help me so much,” Shawna said. “I’ll have more independence in my life. Canine Companions is the largest non-profit provider of assistance dogs for people with disabilities other than blindness, with five regional training centers across the country. Ability Tools

No – our programs aren’t changing and yes, we are still the statewide Assistive Technology Network.

One of our main goals this year was to launch a new website, and that lead us to rethink our look and feel. Along with the new website comes a fresh new look and a name that better reflects who we are and what we do.

We built a new, easy-to-navigate website that is simpler, sleek in design and content and will make searching for Assistive Technology information and resources easier for everyone!

Why Ability Tools? Our new name focuses on the broad variety of AT available, the “tools” that support the “ability” to live independently. The name is designed to get the attention of people who are not familiar with assistive technology. We will continue to use the term Assistive Technology to describe AT products and services.

We hope you like the new name and logo as much as we do.

Success Story – Redding, CA

Record Searchlight and writer Julie Marsh honored “health care heroes” with an article of one of ILSNC consumers on June 29, 2014.  Claudia Girimonte has been a volunteer in the gift shop for her first ten years then became a volunteer escort for a total of fifty four years at Mercy Medical Center.

“It’s fun doing it.” Giramonte says. “You get into a conversation with the patient and I enjoy seeing they are taken care of.  I think it is comforting to the patient.”  

Most of her sight is gone from Macular degeneration and Claudia’s response is “I know the hospital like the back of my hand.  It doesn’t effect me.”

 

ILSNC advocates receive training to better serve our communities…

ILSNC advocates in the month of June received training in options care counseling, understanding chronic pain and its management, assistive technology, and ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training).  Not only do ILSNC directly impact lives through the services and support, but advocates continually improve those services and support with additional training to better serve our communities and consumers.
